Kids Club

Bring the children. That is the whole idea.

Monthly, weekend afternoons - first date being planned

Hagenberg is full of people who moved here with a family, and of families who have always been here. Their children mostly do not know each other. That is a waste, and it is also the easiest thing in the world to fix: put them in a room with dry ice and see what happens.

What we do with them

Things that are genuinely fun and quietly educational, run by people who know what they are doing - experiments included.

  • Experiments - dry ice, things that freeze, things that bang, all properly supervised
  • Playful mathematics - puzzles and games, in the town where Gröbner bases were invented
  • English, in a way that does not feel like school
  • AI, real and imagined - what these machines actually do, and what they definitely cannot
  • Secret codes and invisible ink - cryptography, which Hagenberg has form in
  • Soldering and small electronics, micro:bit and LEGO robotics
  • Building a game in Scratch, and 3D printing things that did not exist before lunch
  • How the internet actually works, acted out with string and envelopes
  • A tour of the place where your parents disappear to every day
  • Whatever else a parent among us knows how to run

And for the parents

You stay in the building, and you get a coffee and an hour of adult conversation while this is going on.

That is not an afterthought. An hour of your own time is the scarcest thing most parents have, and handing it to you is the point. It also means that while the children are making friends, so are you - which is the whole club, happening one floor of noise away.

Why it matters more than it sounds

Children are how a family decides whether it lives somewhere or is just posted there. An international child with Austrian friends is a family that stays. An Austrian child who grows up thinking three languages in a room is normal is worth more to this region than any recruitment campaign.

So this is not childcare attached to a club. It is the same work the club does with adults, done earlier and with better results.

Practical

When. Monthly, on a weekend afternoon - roughly 15:00 to 17:00. Not a weekday evening: that collides with dinner and bedtime, which is how family events end up empty. Once it is running it will land on the same weekend each month, so you can plan around it rather than watch for announcements.

Ages. Two groups, roughly 4 to 7 and 8 to 12, because dry ice and playful mathematics want quite different children. Tell us how old yours are and that is what decides what we plan first.

Language. Children do not need good German or good English. We mix both and nobody minds. Frankly the children sort this out faster than the adults do.

Food. There is always something to eat. Tell us about allergies.

Cost. Free for members, siblings included. No counting heads. Guests donate what they can.

The ask. A parent or two helps run each session. That is genuinely all - you do not need to be a teacher, and if you can boil water you can do dry ice. What the format still needs is one parent who owns it: fixes the weekend each month and asks two others to help. That person has not stepped forward yet.

Interested? Write to hello@hagenberg.international and say roughly how old your children are. A sign-up form follows once we have a date.
